Former American President Jimmy Carter, who will oversee the upcoming Lebanese elections, is expected to meet next week with President Shimon Peres in an effort to release Gilad Shalit.
The former American president last year intervened and arranged for a letter form his son to be delivered to his parents via Hamas leader Khaled Meshal.
In a related matter, the soldier’s parents, Noam and Aviva Shalit, met on Wednesday with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. They also met with Ofir Dekel’s replacement, Chaggai Hadas, who is not responsible for representing Israel in talks with Hamas towards obtaining Gilad’s release.
